Summary of case: First appeal heard 13 June 1917, resulting in 6 months exemption conditional on Dowson joining the Volunteer Training Corps. Second appeal heard on 18 Aug 1917 removed the condition. Arthur Dowson has the sole management of the farm, his father being unable to work and almost blind, doctor's certificate enclosed. There is also a letter from the father asking for the application to be heard in his son's absence, as the journey to Startforth is time-consuming and expensive, and the farm work would suffer.
