Summary of case: “The journeys undertaken by Mr Usher cannot be done by an elderly man or by a woman. It is necessary work for the carrying on of the farm work of the district, and we cannot possibly fill the position he occupies. We have repeatedly advertised for efficient help and it cannot be found.”
Ushers mother was ill, his brother a cripple (a hunchback shoemaker) and another was in the Navy and had recently been torpedoed and was ill. A third brother was in the “mercantile marine”. The local tribunal finds no reason why this man should be called up, the work is not for the good of the community and no hardship to his family would ensure. The local military recruiting officer intervened and the case was reheard. A temporary exemption was granted until 1st of July 1916.
