Summary of case: ‘I have a delicate wife and 4 children all of whom are solely dependent on my business. I’m a Butcher and Pig Dealer and have traded at 59 Dean Road for 9 years. My House and Shop at 59 Dean Road, the rent is £25 with £9-£10 Rates. I occupy two small pieces of land near Manor Road and pig stye where I breed 80 pigs per year and grow in part potatoes. I have a good business and do all the buying myself at Malton and Seamer Markets. Also do my own Slaughtering for about 3 years. I also slaughter for my father who as a Shop in Victoria Road, who since the Bombardment has been in bad health and unable to do his own buying and slaughtering. My only brother who worked for my father voluntarily joined the Army in the early part of the War expecting that I should be able to help my father. I was medically rejected under Lord Derby’s Scheme as I have had apprentices for nearly 5 years and have been ruptured for many years.’ [See also NRCC/CL 9/1/3929]
