Summary of case: ‘I am the tenant of the Balmoral Mews rental of £140 per year, and the Albermarle Mews, Back Albemarle Road rental of £30, also land in Scalby Road £20 per year. Including my house my liability for rent is £208 per year and for local rates £70-£80. I am married and carry on business in very extensive premises as a Job Master, livery stable proprietor and horse dealer. I started some years ago with a small sum I had saved and my business is all my own hard work. It depends on my own personal supervision and control, and if called up for Service I would have to sell my entire stock at a heavy sacrifice. This would be financially disastrous to myself and wife and I should lose the fruits of much labour in establishing my extensive business connections. I keep 15-30 horses, at present I have 17 horses and 30 sheep. I have 5 Landaus, 6 char-a-bancs, 1 brake, 5 governess cars, 2 rolleys and a large stock of harness and other requisites. I have stabling for over 50 horses and have been stabling Government horses for the greater part of the time since War started. I do a large market trade and have an average of about 40 vehicles at my yard on Market days. I value my business at £2000.’ [See also NRCC/CL 9/1/3896]
