Summary of case: ‘That special hardship will ensue upon my mother who is 78 years of age, as I am paying rent and rates for her and keeping my brother aged 40 who is a cripple.’ After the decision the Recruiting Officer, Graham Craig, asks what work Storr is engaged in. The Clerk to the North riding Appeal Tribunal states that Storr is working at Skinningrove Iron Company Ironstone Mines and is working with the horses there. On 12 December 1917 Major General J K Trotter, military representative for Whitby, asks the North Riding Appeal Tribunal if they will give leave for him to appeal to the Central Tribunal: ‘It is one of special importance in the present urgent need for men, the appellant being single, 34 years old, fit for active service, and engaged in no trade of national importance.’ Leave to appeal to the Central Tribunal was refused as it did not fulfil the criteria ;’when some question of principle is involved.’
