His business is the only one between Scarborough and Middlesbrough. His sole apprentice joined up when he became 18. A female assistant left to join her father's business. A substitute assistant subsequently died suddenly. Due to some of these problems a previous appeal had been successful and Wood had been granted exemption to 15 Oct 1917. Wood received call up papers for 15 Oct 1917. His wife wrote twice to the North Riding Appeal Tribunal in support of her husband's case.
