Summary of case: At the local tribunal Richardson said that having lost all our men for the army or national service, together with his father's ill health, has made it impossible for him to carry out the work both clerical and manual. He has been rejected as unfit for service June 1916 by the medical board at Richmond then reclassified at Middlesbrough 30 June 1917 Ciii. He was asking for exemption but would like time in which to carry out present work. The local tribunal granted temporary exemption for three months. The reasons given by the local tribunal to the North Riding Appeal Tribunal for their decision was that ‘this man is well known ... as a leading cricketer for the Club who are champions of the North Riding League. He has had many tries for exemption. On account of his father and the work in hand the tribunal decided to allow him three months to finish up his work or to provide a substitute. The military representative maintained that it was not in the national interest that he remain in civil employment, the basis for his appeal has been made repeatedly and could be indefinitely prolonged. His previous military training would render his army service more efficient. As an expert joiner, though category C3, he would be of use in the army
