Summary of case: On 21 April 1917 granted exemption to 10ct 1917, on grounds of domestic hardship. His wife, who has children two and five years old is suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis and has had two lengthy stays at the Wensleydale Sanatorium at Aysgarth, with her medical condition deteriorating. Supporting letters from Dr Dunbar and JW Pennyman, military representative at Ormesby Hall, confirm this. Her medical orders require open air treatment at home and extra expense for nourishment and extra help with household work which already stretches resources. Moreover, his civil work is of national importance and he possesses a Trade Protection Card. [See also NRCC/CL 9/1/3422]
