Age: 26

Local tribunal: Leyburn Rural District Council
Central tribunal: No
Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Military Service Act
Grounds for appeal: a) continue in current occupation, d) serious hardship, g) exempt occupation
Appellant: Frederick Riddell. Military Representative.
Summary of Case: The original appeal to the local tribunal made by the father stating that he is needed in his current occupation as he ‘attends Richmond market weekly on business in place of his father who was obliged to give it up on health account’. Father states that he is the only butcher in the district and is entirely responsible for slaughtering. These are two certified occupations. The local tribunal gave a conditional exemption provided Thomas Braodley remains in his current occupation. The appellant states that there is a paid hand who assists with the slaughtering on a temporary basis, two daughters who assist in the shop when required and there is another butcher in the town who has ‘at least as big a business’. ‘it would appear therefore that the business could be carried on in his absence and even if closed no serious consequence would arise only personal loss’.
