Summary of case: The man held a certificate of exemption to 20 September 1917. On the 22 September 1917 he appeared at the local tribunal regarding his certificate. He is the managing director of a wholesale and retail ironmongery business, with 15 years’ experience. He supplies fine tools for agriculture and engineering. In addition he holds Class A and B permits for agriculture and munitions and supplies £500 per annum of goods directly under government control for munitions. He is the only man with the practical knowledge to do repairs. The local tribunal gave exemption to 1 January 1918, and stated the part played by this man is very large being the only practical man and the work too is important from a national point of view. The military representative appealed to the North riding Appeal Tribunal stating that ‘On account of his age and medical category he ought to join the Army without delay.’
