Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Attested

Summary of case: Henry Tolson, military representative appealed to the local tribunal on the grounds that Burtonwood would be of more use to the Nation in the Army than in his present occupation. On 2 October 1916 his conditional exemption was withdrawn and varied to temporary to 6 January 1918 by the local tribunal. They heard representatives from his firm and their solicitors who attested to his skills through years of experience despite never having been apprenticed. The local tribunal varied the exemption from conditional to temporary as they believed that he was doing more important work at present than in the Army. The military representative appealed against the local tribunal decision stating ‘I gather for four fifths of his time he is simply a traveller. His expert work largely consists of selecting spare parts from stock to fit breakages.’
