Summary of case: Reginald Beal had previously been granted exemption to the 6 September 1917. On the 1 September 1917 the military representative, Henry Tolson, appealed against this exemption on the grounds that his employer was a solicitor in practice with other employees so Beal could be replaced by a female clerk. The local tribunal hearing was held on the 2 Oct 1917, his employer cited his indispensability owing to his 25 year experience covering death duties, winding up estates and his very wide listed range of public appointments and stewardships in the area. There is a letter of support from Bishopthorpe Rural District Council for whom he held several offices some of which were as required by the government during the war. The firm had already released six men now serving in the army. He was the only man of military age left in the firm, four were under 17 years of age and one of 68.
