Description | North Riding appeal tribunal number: 4350 Appeal against conscription of: Joseph Payne Age: 24 Address: 3 Peasholme Green, York Occupation: Steam tractor driver Local tribunal: York City Council Central tribunal: No Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Military Services Act. Grounds for appeal: a) continue in current occupation, b) engaged in different occupation, d) serious hardship, g) exempt occupation Appellant: Geo Crombie and sons, solicitors acting on behalf Yorkshire Laundries Ltd, C Grainger, General Manager Summary of case: The local tribunal on 2 Oct 1917 gave Payne a temporary exemption to 20 November 1917 and no further application to be made without consent of the tribunal previously obtained. The appeal to the North Riding Appeal Tribunal by his employers was based on the fact that they had a contract to wash blankets in York for the Ripon Camp. These were transported by the steam tractor. This was on hire from a Norfolk firm to his family who were show people. His father was now an invalid and no shows could be carried out until next summer due to no light at Fairs in the evening. The local tribunal in their evidence to the North Riding Appeal Tribunal stated that he was recently convicted at York Police Court for evasion of the requirements of the National Registration Act and so has never held any exemption. They stated that the military authorities would always ensure that the washing would be conveyed. He was 24 years and Class A and they thought that he had evaded military service for a considerable time. Supporting evidence: No Date and decision of North Riding Appeal Tribunal: 22 Oct 1917. Dismissed, decision of Local Tribunal to stand. |
