TitleWWI Appeal Tribunal papers: Albert Edward Wray
DescriptionNorth Riding appeal tribunal number: 4349
Appeal against conscription of: Albert Edward Wray
Age: 39
Address: 20 Priory Street York
Occupation: Carriage builder etc.
Local tribunal: York City Council
Central tribunal: No
Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Attested
Grounds for appeal: Not stated
Appellant: Henry Tolson, Military Representative
Summary of case: Wray’s mother appealed to the local tribunal and stated that they had lost five men to the war and Wray was the only one capable of carrying out the business. Most of the work was repairing for farmers, carriage proprietors and the military. He had previously been found unfit but was now classified as C2. In view of his working in a certified occupation, as well as his medical history the work he is doing is of more national importance than if serving in the army. The local tribunal granted exemption to 1 Jan 1918. The military representative appealed against this decision stating that the man is engaged in a very small repairing business, just sufficient to keep him, his mother and sister. As a skilled tradesman he is at present urgently required for work at an aeroplane factory. In any case the temporary exemption should be made final.
