Summary of case: on 10 April 1917 local tribunal granted exemption to 1 October 1917. Walker & Sons appeal for a further exemption to the North Riding Appeal Tribunal stating that Barks is engaged by them as managing clerk in their business of auctioneers and valuers, but has for 20 years acted as assistant to Duncan C Larg, Sheriff's Officer for the County and City of York. Barks is also a certified bailiff. These duties in connection with the appointments of Sheriff Officer and certified bailiff should be undertaken by those qualified by experience to perform them. This is in the national interest. The firm already have two out of four staff serving, the rest are a man over 66 and this man is the only able bodied and experienced man left. He has also a certificate from Dr P Macdonald, Eye and Ear Specialist in Northern Command stating that he has no useful vision for all practicable purposes in his left eye.
