There are two other sons one of whom has enlisted and the other son is married and lives a distance away in Ripon. A supporting letter from M Spensley of Castle Bolton requests exemption for Joseph Shields for ‘a few months in which to get through their spring work’ and states that ‘it would be a very great hardship to them if their trade and living were snatched away by others in his absence’.
