Summary of Case: Father claims that his son is ‘a starred man’ and that he is ‘troubled with flat feet and bunions and frequently very lame’ so he would not ‘stand military training’. As a blacksmith local farmers rely on him for shoeing the horses and repairing agricultural implements. The local limestone quarry works rely on him for maintaining their equipment and shoeing their horses. The quarry is seen as being important for the war effort as it supplies limestone to the local iron works. The Director of Harmby Limestone Quarries Ltd wrote a letter in support of William Scott’s appeal stating that he is needed to keep the business running. A letter from ‘a Ratepayer’ supported the appeal on the grounds that there were more ‘single young slackers’ available rather than married men having to go.
