Summary of case: Chilton farms 60 acres of inland and moor rights, having 30 beasts, 150 sheep and 3 horses. In March 1917 he was allowed 6 months exemption, but on further appeal on 19 Sep 1917 he was refused an extension, the local tribunal considering that his brother, classified Cii, could manage the farm with the help of a shepherd. On his appeal to the North Riding Appeal Tribunal Chilton gives more detail concerning the farm, and states that he has joined Volunteer Training Corps and put in regular drills, walking 3 1/2 miles each way to do so.
