Summary of case: On 24 March 1917 Hird had been granted an exemption to 1 Oct 1917. HirdÂ’s father is now appealing for a further exemption. His father runs two farms 9 miles apart, totalling 315 acres inland and about 3000 acres of moorland. His own ill-health means that he can work only occasionally. He states that in the previous winter the snow lay from November to May, and two strong and experienced men spent almost their entire time waiting on them, leading hay etc. [See also NRCC/CL 9/1/3189]
