Description | North Riding appeal tribunal number: 4308 Appeal against conscription of: John William Wright Age: 32 Address: 24 Napier St, Middlesbrough Occupation: Butcher's manager Local tribunal: Middlesbrough Borough Council Central tribunal: No Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Attested Grounds for appeal: a) continue in current occupation, d) serious hardship Appellant: Middlesbrough Cooperative Society Ltd. Summary of case: Wright had been given an exemption, cancelled by the Middlesbrough local tribunal, and granted by the North Riding Appeal Tribunal until 1 Jan 1918. On 22 Nov 1917 the employers wrote to the tribunal asking for a further extension to 1 Mar 1918. There was a great scarcity of bacon and ham, so customers now deprived of provisions usually sold at the Coop grocers were now besieging the butchers instead. The services of Wright as manager of the butchers were therefore essential. They also claimed that it was work of national importance as the members of the Coop were mostly workers on munitions and similar. On 1 Dec 1917 the clerk of the North Riding Appeal Tribunal wrote to refuse further extensions. Supporting evidence: No Date and decision of North Riding Appeal Tribunal: 12 Oct 1917. Dismissed |
