Summary of Case: ‘One of my partners voluntarily enlisted in 1915. We have had 10 men of our staff which have joined the army, of these men we have never appealed for any of them, but have rather encouraged them in enlisting. At the present time our staff consists of 11 men, which is very much depleted, these men’s ages with the excepting of one, range from 60 to 70 years, so you will see the position we are placed in, as there are various jobs that we dare not put these men to. Ours is the oldest established business in the district and the greatest portion of our work consists of estate and farm work, which we think is of national importance as this work must be carried on. Apart from outside work, I have the sole charge of the clerical, estimating and financial part of the business, which I have now undertaken for the past 18 years.’ [See also NRCC/Cl 9/1/3392]
