Age: 25
Address: Alma Farm, West Witton, Leyburn
Occupation: Shepherd
Local tribunal: Leyburn Rural District Council
Central tribunal: No
Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Military Service Act
Grounds for appeal: Not stated
Appellant: George Iveson, father and employer
Summary of case: The appeal to the local tribunal: “we are farming upwards of 200 acres of land and we keep 150 ewes in lamb.” George Iveson considers his son is indispensable on the farm as the shepherd to these ewes in lamb…. the said Metcalfe K Iveson is my son and is quite indispensable to me as shepherd upon the said farm as I have no other sons or daughters upon the farm.” The local tribunal contradicts this that “There are two sons at home working on farm and claims were made for exemption in both cases. The wife helps with cheese making and there is a servant girl 15 years old. The father is 62. The tribunal considered that one son might be spared and the father did not appear to think this unreasonable. Exemption conditional on his remaining in his present occupation was granted to one son (Frank) and the application in respect of this man was refused”, The applicant’s father George Iveson appeals against this decision, giving the same reasons.
