DescriptionNorth Riding appeal tribunal number: 4232
Appeal against conscription of: Thomas Tennant
Age: 39
Address: 51 Garfield Road, Scarborough
Occupation: Dress department manager
Local tribunal: Scarborough Borough Council
Central tribunal: No
Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Attested
Grounds for appeal: Not stated
Appellant: J F Vesey FitzGerald, Military Representative
Summary of case: Tennant has been granted an exemption on the grounds of hardship because of his wife's poor health. Although the local tribunal felt that while this in itself was insufficient his exemption could be continued as he was also running a department in the absence of his firm's two partners. However, both partners had been granted exemption on the grounds of conscientious objection and were involved in agricultural work of national importance. The local tribunal would have been willing to vary their certificates if they were to come back to the firm but they have not done so. The military representative appealed against this decision.
