Local tribunal: Thirsk Rural District Council

Summary of case: Clarke had earlier been rejected on medical grounds but conscripted later. He had an exemption but, when he asked for it to be extended, the Tribunal failed to tell him of their decision. This was to allow him a further two months to make arrangements to wind up his business. By the time he knew of this, he was out of time to appeal. He said he only had a day girl to manage his business if he was called up, and he would suffer financially as he had invested significantly in this newsagent/stationer/tobacconist business. He emphasised his medical unfitness [although the nature of it was Not stated in the papers]. The local tribunal considered he had taken advantage of a clerical error, and that his appeal was to be dismissed but that he was not to be called before 1 Oct 1917.
