Appellant: Lieut. F E Walker, Military Representative
Summary of case: He is not only a keeper of cattle on a smallholding but also a stonemason on an estate of 3000 acres where he also undertakes drainage work. Should he be called up serious hardship would ensue in that he would have to sell his stock. His wife is not strong enough to do the work and there are two children to support. The Thirsk local tribunal had granted a conditional exemption on 22 August 1917. The military representative appeals against this stating that: ‘No difficulty should be found in carrying out necessary repairs on the Kepwick Estate, as an elder brother of the above and an older man is available and now employed. The small holding this man has is only 8 acres of grass land.’
