DescriptionNorth Riding appeal tribunal number: 41
Appeal against conscription of: Frederick William Hall
Age: 36
Address: 131 Falsgrave Road, Scarborough
Occupation: Market gardener and horsemen
Local tribunal: Scarborough Borough Council
Central tribunal: No
Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Attested
Grounds for appeal: a) continue in current occupation, e) exempt occupation
Appellant: JM Roberts, employer
Summary of case: Employer believes that Frederick Hall is in a reserved occupation as he works at market garden. Due to so many horsemen and lorrymen being called up he would be difficult to replace with an older man (due to the hard work and exposure to weather). Mr Roberts has three horses and only one horseman making it difficult to get produce to market. The local tribunal found that Mr Roberts could attend to his own horses and women could be used to carry out the less manual work.
