Summary of case: This man has been employed by me for about nine years as Motor Car Driver and Engineer. He has for some time past been working a Government Tractor and Plough and holds a certificate from the North Riding of Yorkshire War Agricultural Executive Committee that he is already engaged whole tie on farms on farm work of National importance. Although the War Agricultural Executive Committee have a claim upon his whole time there are occasions when they can spare him to drive my car to enable me to carry out my public duties under the North Riding County Council, the Board of Guardians etc, as my residence is several miles from a railway, and if he is again taken into the Army and I am deprived of such services it will cause me serious inconvenience. He had an accident a few years ago and suffered grave injury to his head with the result that he is now stone deaf in the left ear, and his brain is affected, and he suffers from vertigo and dizzy fits. He has practically no sensation down the left side of his body. He enlisted soon after the outbreak of War and served six months with the Colours, but of that time he spent three months in hospital, and after being specially examined by a Board of Army Doctors he was discharged from the Army on the ground that he was not likely to become an efficient soldier. He has now been called up for re-examination and passed B.1. I submit that he is of more use in the National Interests in the work he is now engaged than he would be if again employed in Military Service.’ [See also NRCC/CL 9/1/4100]
