Summary of case: ‘1. The appeal is against the Condition attached to the exemption that is conditional on joining the V.T.C. I farm 60 acres at the Spital, Bowes about 1200 feet above sea level, 30 acres are meadow. I have 156 sheep stints on Bowes Moor. I have 16 head of cattle (including 6 Milk cows), 164 sheep plus their lambs and 3 horses. 2. I do all the work myself except when I hire for hay time. I have a wife and children aged 4 years and 1 year. After 10th October to 16th May I have to shepherd my sheep on the moor. The heaf [sic] is a mile and a half away across the valley, and runs from 1,250 feet to about 1500 up the fell. The sheep are to visit daily. 3. The nearest V.T.C. is three miles away down at |Bowes. It is impossible without neglecting the farm that I can put in the number of drills as I am kept going from morning to night. If called away on duty I would have no one to look after the farm. No woman could do the work, however willing. 4. I submit the condition is not reasonable and that I am entitled to exemption without this condition.’
