Summary of case: ‘That the applicant is doing work of national importance, as in addition to the ordinary boot making and boot repairing business he is engaged. “In making sea boots for trawler and sea patrol men: Special drainage boots to the order of both the North and East Ridings of Yorkshire War Agricultural Committee and to the order of other drainage Authorities. Under Paragraph D; That his business is a one man business which cannot be disposed of and which would be entirely destroyed if he were called up on Military service, with consequent loose of capital invested therein. The business was established 13 years ago by his Father. Applicant and one older brother Sidney Dodd were employed in it prior to 1914. The Father died in March 1915, his death being accelerated by the bombardments. Sidney Dodd joined the Army and is serving in France. Of the 9 men only 2are left, one aged 70 and one aged 62. The applicant has two other brothers, Walter Dodd, married before the War, with two children, served in the Army discharges unfit, and now engaged by the Admiralty as turner and fitter, which was his work prior to the War: Bertram Dodd, aged 17, now employed as junior clerk by the N.E.R. The Applicant married prior the War and has solely dependent on him, his wife and two children, aged 5 and 3: his Mother and two sisters, aged 18 and 15: and partly dependant on him his youngest brother Bertram Dodd. The total rents paid in respect of his business amount to £124. Since he was before the Area Appeal Tribunal on the 19 April last. (when he was granted temporary exemption to the 31 July he has advertised for a man to take his place in the business and has received one reply only, and that from a man who was entirely unsuitable.’ [See also NRCC/CL 9/1/3420]
