Summary of case: ‘I suffer from Neurasthenia and have been for the last 7 years. Also a sufferer from chronic indigestion. I have to take special diet to keep anything in my stomach at all. The Local Military Representatives logic was that a man who had had all the torments of the neurasthenic for 7 years had merely “headache and nervousness”. This is my wretched condition would be distinctly funny were it not so serious for me. My work as Insurance Agent does not exceed 3 hours daily and even then I have often to rest for short periods in between. My physical condition when I was placed C.1 recently was poorer than when I was placed C111 before. This is according to the Military doctors own showing. I was deteriorated both in weight and eyesight. I am attested man and a trained clerk and have offered to do clerical work in the arm, which I would have been doing for the last 15 months had they called upon me. Failing their decision to employ me as army clerk, I unhesitatingly ask to be referred to the Central Medical Board, because in my physical condition could not drill. I have tried simple graduated exercises to try and improve the physique and have had to leave them off. Hence I should be hopeless in more strenuous exercises. I have not tried to shirk, but have even longed for clerical work in the army which would be consistent with my physical condition.’
