Description | North Riding appeal tribunal number: 4091 Appeal against conscription of: Frank Baker Age: 37 Address: 7 York Place, Scarborough Occupation: Architect etc. Local tribunal: Scarborough Borough Council Central tribunal: No Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Military Service Act Grounds for appeal: a) continue in current occupation, d) serious hardship and e) ill health or infirmity Appellant: Frank Baker Summary of case: I was 37 years old in September last and married with one child. I was medically rejected under Lord Derbys Scheme as I suffer from Varicocele of long standing. I have a considerable practice as an Architect and Surveyor. Purchased a share in the business in 1905 from my late partner Mr. H. Davis for £500 and also put into the business a further sum of £50 as working Capital. 2 or 3 years later my partner died and I paid a further sum of £266 for Good Will &c., in accordance with the terms of the Partnership agreement. I spent nearly £100 on improvements to the office so I have paid out £900 in connection with my practice. This sum represented practically the whole of my Private means. If I am called to the Colours my practice will be worthless and I submit at my age it would be a case of very serious hardship. I have considerable amount of work in hand and in prospect. I have also been interested with the control of supervision of work upon which it is intended to start on conclusion of War and I submit it will then be of National Importance to secure work for as many men discharged from the Army as possible. I desire to give details of work in hand. Date and decision of North Riding Appeal Tribunal: 13 Aug 1917 Dismissed. |
