He appealed again requesting absolute exemption 17 August 1916 and was granted conditional exemption so long as he remained in his present occupation and joined the Volunteer Training Corps. Military Representative, appealed stating it was no longer in the national interests that Green remained in civil employment. The certificate was withdrawn and he was ordered to report on 1 September 1917. Green appealed again on 6 July 1917 stating; Since my fathers death 11/2 years ago I have had the full management of the business out of which I have had to maintain my mother, my wife, two children and myself. My mother is 66 years of age and I am joint tenant with her. She could not manage the business by herself as she is unable to write and could not do the travelling which occupies 4 days a week. If the hawking was given up the business could not be carried on and very serious hardship would result if the same had to be closed down.
