Summary of case: Matthew Jackson appealed in May 1916 stating he provides work to military camps and feared losing Jackson would lead to the breaking up of his business. Temporary exemption granted to 1October 1916. Matthew Jackson appealed again 20 September 1916 giving the same reasons. Conditional exemption was granted so long as he remained in present occupation and continued in Volunteer Training Corps. Military representative, stating it was no longer in the national interests for Tom Jackson to remain in civil employment. The certificate was withdrawn and he was instructed to report on 5 September 1917. Appeal by William Jackson and Sons on 6 July 1917 stating: ‘We are the only brick, tile and drain pipe manufacturers now carrying on business in the district. Prior to the war our staff comprised ten men in addition to the man appealed for and has now been reduced to three.’
