Summary of case: ‘The applicants (Geo Ayres & Sons) of the market Place, Thirsk carry on the oldest wholesale business in the town. They are large grocers and provisions dealers and MR Henry Ayre, the sole remaining partner, is a fully qualified chemist and dispenser. They applied for and were granted temporary exemption until 1 July 1916. In the meantime the employee attained 41 years of age and they were advised it was unnecessary to make a further application.
