Summary of case: Hall originally appealed in May 1917 for absolute exemption on grounds of serious hardship and health and was granted exemption conditional on his health remaining the same. Appeal was made by Douglas Jamieson, Military Representative in July 1917 stating that the exemption given had been contrary to the Military Service Act. The military appeal was dismissed stating no jurisdiction. The Military Representative appealed to the Central Tribunal and the case was dismissed. The appeal tribunal case sent to the Central Tribunal states: ‘The Appeal tribunal were of opinion that this was a point of law which they had no jurisdiction to decide and they dismissed the military appeal. The opinion of the Central Tribunal is requested as to whether they were right in so doing.’ The Central Tribunal dismissed the appeal stating: ‘The local tribunal’s order of the 5 July 1917 granting exemption to the applicant was a valid order notwithstanding that their prior order of the 7 July 1916 was invalid,’
