DescriptionNorth Riding appeal tribunal number: 3886
Appeal against conscription of: Edward Bogg
Age: 31
Address: 48 Russell St. York
Occupation: Managing clerk, corn buyer and salesman
Local tribunal: York City Council
Central tribunal: No
Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Military Service Act
Grounds for appeal:
Appellant: Allen Boothroyd, Military Representative
Summary of case: Mr Bogg is employed by Messrs Page & Son one of the partners being of military age. The firm who are corn and seed merchants ought to release either this man or the junior partner. The local tribunal granted conditional exemption to Mr Bogg and temporary exemption for three months final to the junior partner. The latter has appealed and this appeal is therefore entered in order that both cases may be considered by the appeal tribunal. In their reasons for their decision the local tribunal writes: ‘The solicitor to the man appeared before the local tribunal 3 July 1917. The local tribunal thought either the junior partner or Mr. Bogg should be spared and were of the opinion that as Mr. Page Senior is still able frequently to attend his office and certain markets and Mr. Bogg is a man of great experience, Mr J.J. B. Page should be spared. They thought however that time should be given him for arrangements to be made in so large a business and granted temporary exemption until 6th Oct (final) These men appear to be rather corn merchants than seed experts and as in the former they are not in the list of "General Reservations" p.6 (R.136)’
