Summary of case: Harris states that there are six children at home who are wholly dependent on his income of 34 shillings and sixpence, army pension from father, and thirty six shillings per week Harris he earns. He has one sister who is continually under medical treatment. One brother is serving in the army and another brother is lost on active service. The appellant appeared before the local tribunal on 5 June 1917. In their reasons for refusing his appeal to them, the local tribunal wrote that the mother has a pension of 34 shillings, the soldier brother makes an allotment of 3 shillings and six pence, and the appellant could make at least the same allotment and a sister earns 6 shillings or 7 shillings making about 47 shillings in all. The local tribunal thought that this income would meet the needs of the family. Before the local tribunal it was stated that the claim was not so much one of financial hardship as that the appellant was the only adult left at home to look after his mother.
