Summary of case: The representative of the insurance company appeared before the local tribunal on 3 July 1917 This company had released a very large proportion of their men and the man now in question is dealing with claims under the Workman’s Compensation Act at their Sheffield Branch. The only male employees at the Sheffield Office (The Yorkshire Insurance Company Ltd. ) is the manager, the man now claimed for and an old cashier who is not competent to take this man’s place. It was stated that the total premiums paid for the Sheffield work was 23,000 for 1916. The military representative stated: ‘This firm in their Sheffield Office had last year an average of 22 accident claims a week. For this work and ordinary insurance they have three males and the applicant, besides a cashier of 65 and a number of female clerks, whom they admitted were getting very useful. I think this man should go at once.’
