I have to look after 164 acres of land and my only assistance in one aged man for six days a week and my brother whose varicose veins prevent him working on the land. ….. My other brother has joined up. We have five working horses and I have not a moment to spare from agriculture and attending the Volunteer Training Corps would mean a journey of up to five miles there and back and I cannot do it.’.
