Description | North Riding appeal tribunal number: 3822 Appeal against conscription of: Kenneth Gilbraith Age: 18 Address: 9 Trafalgar Street, Thornaby Occupation: Student Teacher Local tribunal: Thornaby Borough Council Central tribunal: No Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Military Service Act Grounds for appeal: f) conscientious objection Appellant: Kenneth Gilbraith Summary of case: I appealed to the local tribunal for absolute exemption on the grounds of a conscientious objection to both combatant and non-combatant work. In my written answers to the questions of the tribunal I stated that I not only objected to non-combatant work but that I was also unwilling to undertake any work whatever as a condition of my being exempted. This was made more definite when, in answers to the Chairman, I said that I would not join The Friends Ambulance Unit. Yet the local tribunal would only grant me exemption from combatant service, which in no way satisfies my conscientious objection, without giving any reasons for their decision. Supporting evidence: No Date and decision of North Riding Appeal Tribunal: 23 Aug 1917. Allowed. Exemption from combatant service provided that he takes up and continues in work as a schoolmaster in Brookfield School, Co. Down. He is to be exempt from all military service. |
