Summary of case: I have been established in business as a Hairdresser and Tobacconist in Redcar for 8 years past. I was given one month’s exemption by the Redcar Tribunal on 15th March 1916, and in consequence of this I closed my Hairdressing Salon but continued private outdoor work of which I have a good connection and I also continued my Tobacco business. I did this in anticipation of having to join up. On 7th April 1916 Richmond Medical Board rejected me as unfit and I considered I was then unlikely to be called up. Therefore devoted more time to my Tobacco business and have developed the same and considerably increased my stock this year in anticipation of Summer trade. I have increased the annual turnover by nearly £300. I am in a delicate state of health and for years past have suffered from Gastric Catarrh and have been constantly under Medical attention. I can only keep myself in anything like normal condition by a rigorous special diet. I also suffer from Spinal trouble which would not permit of me carrying any amount of weight. I appeal on business grounds and also that I am medically unfit for Military service.
