Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Military Services Act
Grounds for appeal: Not stated
Appellant: John Thomas Aldison, Low House, Stanghow, Boosbeck, employer.
Summary of case: He supplies 300 families twice a day with new milk, As it is a wide district to work and means a journey of more than 12 miles a day. He retails 50 gallons per day and works 7 days per week. It is also his work to get the cows in and help to milk. As there is a bull always with the cows it is no fit job for a woman to do. He was used to all farm work before he started selling the milk and I find him very useful in hay-time and harvest or any busy time. As the food controller advocated increase in the milk supply I have been at some expense to increase mine. My father and I have had the present milk round for over 40 years. As you must have a honest straightforward and clean man for the job, it is likely I would have to give up the milk business if he has to join up. He has four young children and a delicate wife. There are roughly speaking 1800 person dependent on this man and I think he is doing work of greater national importance now than if he has to join up. As he has to go all weathers it is very hard and trying for a man let alone a woman.
