Description | North Riding appeal tribunal number: 3782 Appeal against conscription of: Ronald George Nicholas Age: 18 Address: Market Place Thirsk Occupation: Ironmongers apprentice Local tribunal: Thirsk Rural District Council Central tribunal: No Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Military Services Act Grounds for appeal: c) education or training d) serious hardship Appellant: L. Nicholas, employer Summary of case: That having already lost my Manager J. Andrews, I am left entirely without assistance of any male employee except that my son (the man appealed for) who is apprenticed to Mr Lightfoot Ironmonger, Northallerton, assists me on a Monday (Market Day) until an odd (sic) [another] man arrives to assist me for this day a week only. My business is that of an Agricultural and Furnishing Ironmonger and being a Widow am totally upon the same for the livelihood of myself and family. My Shop and premises are le to me at a rent of £65 per annum and I have all rates and taxes to pay in addition. My son comes home every evening and he then helps me with the heavy work such as taking goods into the Country, fitting up bedsteads, unloading and carrying to the stock rooms etc., all of which it is impossible for a woman to do. The remainder of the time I have only my daughter to assist me. If my son is taken from me altogether I shall be left in a very embarrassed position and I respectfully submit that very serious financial hardship will accrue if I am left to carry on the business without the little assistance that he is able to give me. In the event of ill health I should have no one to look after the business and I apprenticed my son to Mr. Lightfoot at Northallerton in order that he might better learn his trade and fit him to take full charge after he had completed his articles. I therefore respectfully ask that he may be granted exemption from Military Service on the above grounds.
