Description | North Riding appeal tribunal number: 3779 Appeal against conscription of: Douglas Lambert Age: 26 Address: Victoria Avenue, Sowerby, Thirsk Occupation: Soap traveller Local tribunal: Thirsk Rural District Council Central tribunal: No Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Attested Grounds for appeal: a) continue in current occupation, d) serious hardship Appellant: Douglas Lambert Summary of case: 'At the outbreak of the war in August 1914 I volunteered for service on the West coast of Africa, but was refused. Returning to England I was rejected on six subsequent occasions. Believing these to be final, I got married and to have to join up now after being refused so many times (when I was single) would be a great personal hardship. As I am only classed C1 and am already training with the Volunteer Training Corps [VCT] consider that I shall be of more service in my present occupation, as I was sent by my firm to that district to release a general service man, and am also doing the work of another agent, who has joined the colours. The case papers contain a letter from the Captain in of the VCT has agreed with Lambert's wish to be released on medical grounds. A doctors certificate 'he is unable to attend drill owing to debility owing to Malaria. I advise that he discontinue the drills for some considerable time.'
