Summary of case: Metcalfe has had two previous exemptions, and is applying for a third. He has a farm of 120 acres, 72 of which are arable. It is strong clay and wet land, so takes a good deal of working. He is the only man capable of ploughing, sowing, reaping stacking and thatching the crops when harvested. He is joint tenant with his brother, George Metcalfe, who through illness is only able to do the lightest of farm work. If Herbert Metcalfe goes for military service the farm will have to be given up. [See also NRCC/CL 9/1/2470]
