Summary of case: Brown's employer, Sir William Cresswell Gray, owned a shipping company in Hartlepool; also his home at Thorp Perrow was a convalescent home for officers. He said he needed Brown to drive him to the station for business meetings etc; also Brown drove the officers about. Temporary exemptions had been granted but Gray had written demanding that Brown be granted total exemption, otherwise the home would have to be closed. The Clerk to the North Riding Appeal Tribunal replied that the convalescent home was mentioned in an earlier appeal, therefore there were no new circumstances. Gray's reply to that said he was surprised to hear of the tribunal's decision and said it would be their responsibility if the home had to close. [See also NRCC/CL 9/1/2465]
