Summary of case: Passed C1 by the Medical Board in Sept 1916 and granted temporary exemption to 1 Jan 1917. He was a widower with four children, and had asthma. He could not stand the strain of training and ‘practically useless’ when having an attack. He had three more month’s exemption provided he joined the Voluntary Training Corps. In May 1917 he asked about exemption as he was getting married (again) in June 1917. Two more months were then granted provided he continued with the Voluntary Training Corps. The military representative asked for the exemption to be revoked, as Cherry had made no attempt to combine business with other butchers.
