Description | North Riding appeal tribunal number: 3764 Appeal against conscription of: Matthew Brockhill Lambert Age: 22 Address: Wathgill, Downholme Occupation: Stocksman Local tribunal: Richmond Rural District Council Central tribunal: No Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Military Service Act Grounds for appeal: a) continue in current occupation d) serious hardship Appellant: William Lambert, father Summary of case: Lambert had been earlier given a temporary exemption to 13 May 1917, to enable Lambert Snr to bring home a younger son who was on another farm. He had not done so and asked for further exemption but this had been denied. Another son was already in France and if Matthew Lambert was called up, the farm would be shorthanded during haymaking time. The local tribunal stated in their reasons for their decision in May 1917 that they had suggested Lambert's place on the farm could be taken by a man from the Agricultural Battalion.
