Summary of case: Barningham had been passed C1 by the medical examiner, having lost his left eye, and been given a temporary exemption to 13 Jul 1917. He also had a delicate wife and five very young children. The military representative objected on the grounds that BarninghamÂ’s exemption was not on account of his occupation and that it was in the national interest that he joins the army. The tribunal dismissed the appeal and extended the temporary exemption to 1 Oct 1917 on condition he remained employed in timber sawying [sic]
