Description | North Riding appeal tribunal number: 3724 Appeal against conscription of: Joseph Utley Age: 18 Address: Swineside, Middleham Occupation: Shepherd Local tribunal: Leyburn Rural District Council Central tribunal: No Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Military Services Act 1916 Grounds for appeal: Not stated Appellant: Frederick Riddell, Military Representative Summary of case: The appeal to the local tribunal had been made by Utleys father stating that he had two farms, one at Swineside of 50 acres of grass land which his son looks after and another at West Scrafton of 40 acres which the father looks after. They have 100 sheep, 2 horses and 18 beasts. The son is the only help he has, the other son being in the army. The local tribunal granted him temporary exemption to 1 August 1917. The military representative appealed to the North Riding Appeal Tribunal stating that since the man was 18, passed fit for general service it was not in the national interest that he remain in his present job indefinitely. The two holdings were small, close together, entirely grass, and considering the need for men it does not appear necessary to retain two men for the work, female assistance should be ample. He also suggested that if not taken for service he should be available for substitution. The local tribunal stated that they did not consider that the father could look after both farms. Supporting evidence: No Date and decision of North Riding Appeal Tribunal: 21 June 1917 Allowed Military appeal. Certificate to be cancelled |
